Artist Statement
As a young child, I had grown up with siblings. My siblings were not going to make it long in the world due to a genetically born disease. I was the only one who hadn’t genetically developed the disease that had taken away my siblings. Due to this tragedy, I grew up very quickly and at times felt invisible to my parents, since all their time was taken up by my siblings. This life-changing experience sparked my interest in my ghost girl collection.
The little girl in the collection of “ghost girl” is my daughter. I photographed old and abandoned buildings and then digitally added my daughter in a ghostly form to the images. During the creation process, I think about what caused the building to become abandoned and who happened to live in the house. I wonder if they had a little girl that loved to look out windows or play in the yard.
When searching for old abandoned buildings I, also photograph the nature around them. I love photographing all the different flowers, flying insects, and butterflies that are flying around. I think of myself as an all around photographer that likes to be able to make memories of the outside world and of my children. When I am in my darkest days and thoughts, I find that taking photographs of abandoned places and adding ghostly images into the image is very therapeutic when I am feeling lost and lonely.
